Finnish language is the native language of the Finns, which is the major ethnic group of Finland. Finnish is one of the official languages of Finland. According to Nordic language convention, Finnish speakers that settled in Nordic countries, have a freedom to communicate in Finnish itself with local official bodies in all the Nordic countries. Brief about Finnish language in early period Finnish language is said to have existed for over 5,000 years. It is observed that Finnish belongs to the subgroup of Baltic- Finnic languages of Uralic family of languages. Proto- Uralic language, from which Finnish is believed to have originated first, existed in the tribes settled along the Ural Mountains and the central region of Volga. Since the 14th century, Finnish is believed to have existed in the form of only oral conversation. Oral form of the languages was also restricted to the general day-to-day conversation as the trade communications, government official communications, and religious preaching’s, carried out in different languages other than Finnish. The written form is said to exist from the 15th century, onwards. Found in the 15th century, the written form of Finnish language was limited to some quotes, but by the 16th century, detailed Finnish writing systems was developed by a Finnish bishop named Mikael Agricola. He was responsible to develop a large vocabulary, which almost half is still in use. The writing system was so developed that it had influences on German, Swedish and Latin in one form or another. Mikael Agricola, created this Finnish writing system, mostly for publication of religious books, where its application was restricted to a specific field. By the end of the 19th century, Finnish had gained importance and was found in commercial, official, and other types of communications. This was mainly because of the consistent efforts of Johan Snellman, who wanted to make the Finnish writing system applicable in all types of fields. While going through this process, there were various improvements done in Finnish language. Elias Lonnort was another contributor for improving the Finnish vocabulary in modern times. Languages that have influenced the Finnish language Finnish language was strongly influenced by the Swedish, German and Latin languages. In later years, it was influenced by languages, such as Slavic, Baltic, Turkic and Iranian. In recent years, English had highly influenced Finnish and several loanwords that have been incorporated in the vocabulary. |
