| Finding a Career in Finnish Translation |
|
These days, advanced telecommunications networks and high-speed computers have made global business the new economic frontier. Companies and individuals alike can now look beyond domestic borders for new markets, employees, and corporate allies. Given these trends, translation has become a very lucrative field to work in—albeit one that requires a list of skills and intensive training. Finnish translators, who work with a language that almost six million people speak worldwide, are particularly desirable, as they can provide companies in Finland access to the world market, and companies across the globe access to the Finnish markets. But what does it take to find a career among Finnish language translators? The following tips will help you decide if working in Finnish translation is right for you: 1.) Do you possess the necessary language skills? Finnish language translators must possess excellent written and verbal expression skills, as well as an extensive knowledge of Finnish as well as another language. In order to be effective Finnish translators, aspirants must be able to clearly understand ideas and be capable of self-expression in both languages.
2.) Do you have the necessary education and training? Finnish language translators must be extremely familiar with the Finnish language, as well as another language. If you are a native Finnish speaker, do you have any formal education in the Finnish language? If you speak another language, do you have any education pertaining to that language? Most Finnish translators have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher, so if you are thinking about joining their ranks, it might be wise to research an appropriate course of study at a college or university.
3.) Are you qualified for specialty Finnish language translation? In today’s highly competitive business world, Finnish language translators must be able to provide their clients with fast translations that are as accurate as possible. One way to accomplish this is to specialize in a subset of translation applications, such as legal translation, medical / scientific translation, information technology translation, financial translation, etc. Clients will be more likely to hire specialized Finnish translators whose specialty coincides with their needs. Do you have an appropriate level of knowledge and experience in a certain field to specialize in the translation of related documents?
4.) Can you qualify to be a certified Finnish translator? People who require legal documents, such as contracts, birth certificates, deeds, immigration papers, etc, to be translated will enlist the services of a certified Finnish translator. Finnish language translators who fall under this category are those qualified to produce certified Finnish translations. In order to become certified, Finnish translators must register with the local courts in the area where the translated document is to be used, and will usually be required to pass a licensing exam. These exams will judge whether or not the Finnish language translators who take them are able to produce an extremely accurate translation of legal materials, without losing any subtle detail of meaning. Finnish translators who pursue this career avenue must be extremely detail-oriented, and have a background in legal translation.
